Also,
you can put step 3 into your /etc/apache2/users/matt.conf file. I think its recommended somewhere (by someone official sounding)
:)

But note: Timemachine DOES NOT backup your apache2 configuration(s) OR your "host" file. Just discovered this after losing my hard disk and have spent a couple of hours redoing all my virtual domains I'm developing locally :(

Thanks for your very clearly written and thorough procedure. I work with the Disabled Students Organization at UC Berkeley. Our local mac web server was still running Tiger because it had complex php programming built around a MAMP environment with half a dozen Virtual Hosts.

We started getting UC Berkeley campus security warnings that said our PHP version was out of date and had many potential security holes. I was under the gun to get everything updated Leopard with the most recent version of Apache 2 and PHP 5.

I'm glad you mentioned checking the error_log files because I was doing everything right but forget to fix the pathway to the new error_log file in each declaration of VirtualHosts. This error apparently was enough to break Apache whenever I uncommented the include to the virtual host file.

Thanks again - I'll be sure to mention this blog to out WebNet group on campus.

Hi Matt, I ended on your post because I am trying to configure my vhosts on my machine.

Basically, I know my way around and I have setup the vhosts the same way than you do in this tutorial, but if the vhost and my host files are picked up properly, any vhost I set up renders exactly as what I'd have going to 127.0.0.1, in other terms, with any vhost I set up and try, I end up at the document root of my web server.

I was wondering if it is something you came through.

Cheeers!
